The second HMHS Class
of 1956 Scholarship for Further Education in Music was
awarded to Abigail Rae Sparrow, HMHS Class of 2008, at
the Senior Awards Night on June 3 at the High School.
The
scholarship was presented by 1956 classmates Baird
Foster and Ken Murray (who was in the area from
Minnesota on business). Abigail, known by her nickname,
“Abby,” had asked a younger sister and HMHS student,
Amy, to accept the award in her behalf. Abby herself
could not attend the ceremony for a legitimate reason:
as a vocalist, Abby is currently appearing in “Les
Miserables” at Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theater
(LesMisphilly.com).
Abby, a top
musical talent at HMHS, received a number of other
awards: HMHS Theater Arts Award; Theater Arts Award,
sponsored by the Haddon Summer Music Theater; The Harry
Townsend Kaufmann Performing Arts Award; and A New
Beginning…In Memory of September 11th
Scholarship.
The Sparrow
family moved from Chicago to Haddonfield in July, 2006
due to Mr. Sparrow’s job change. Abby has two other
sisters, Anna, 12, and Allison, 10.
Multi-talented
Abby participated in the national tour of “Scrooge, the
Musical” while in Chicago; and recently she created
Sunday School videos for United Methodist
Communications. Abby plans to study Musical Theater at
New York University this fall, working toward her
aspirations to be on Broadway.
Abby sends a large
“thank you” to the Class of 1956 and says, “It is really
great for a class to honor the students studying music.
So many scholarships and awards are presented for
athletics and academics. Thank you all for honoring
music!”
