Marilyn Lee Mauger's Biography
Marilyn Lee Mauger retired from the Haddonfield School System in 2003 after thirty four years of teaching English in the Middle and High Schools. In her later years of teaching she taught advanced placement courses and was not simply a teacher, but a true academician. Marilyn constantly researched her materials and often instituted new literature units at the high school level. In addition, she constantly added to her own education and taught in many other avenues outside of the Haddonfield system. Even after retiring she continued her educational endeavor by spending a year in England earning a masters degree in Museum Studies from the University of Newcastle. Her students report that Marilyn was a tough and demanding teacher whose efforts to instruct the classes in logical and effective writing paid off greatly when they entered university level studies. Says Allison Stedman, (HMHS ’92), professor of foreign languages at Bucknell University, “Mrs. Lee-Mauger is one of the bests teachers that I have ever had, period. Early in my life, she instilled in me a love of writing, a standard of originality and excellence that I have never forgotten.” According to State Senator John H. Adler, HMHS ’77, “Marilyn taught me lessons in English and in life that I use on a daily basis more than thirty years later”. Marilyn did not limit her achievements to the classroom. For many years she was the coordinator of the Walt Whitman Association annual poet’s contest and many Haddonfield students have been winners. She also served on the Principal’s Cabinet as an English Department Facilitator and served on the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. In addition she was selected for the Fulbright Memorial Fund award for study in Japan. She was also active in social betterment activities such as involving students in programs to improve opportunities for Camden residents and teaching at a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. Marilyn’s other professional and educational achievements are too numerous to list herein. In summary, it is apparent from the volumes of recommendations for Marilyn that she was truly a dedicated teacher, a scholar and a mentor. Marilyn’s leisure interests are travel and art.
